| 2010-03-08 - Hopewell Prince George Ft. Lee marks Red Cross Month by thanking supporters and volunteers |
With March proclaimed as Red Cross Month, we want to recognize and thank the supporters and volunteers whose efforts enable the Red Cross to respond to disasters.
“The Red Cross works tirelessly to be there with help and hope when people need it most–and we are grateful for the public support that enables us to continue our work – here at home and abroad,” said Mary Atterholt, Executive Director. “Our community and our nation depend on the Red Cross in times of need, and the Red Cross depends on the support of people in America to achieve its mission.”
“During Red Cross Month, we want to thank the valuable supporters whose generosity makes the work of the American Red Cross possible,” she added. “In addition, Red Cross Month is a great time for people to get involved with the Red Cross, such as donating blood; signing up for a CPR, first aid or another Red Cross course; giving a financial gift that can really save the day when the next disaster strikes, or getting involved as a volunteer.”
Although major disasters such as earthquakes in Haiti and Chile, and hurricanes and wildfires capture national media headlines, the day-to-day work of the Red Cross takes place in local communities. The HPG- Ft. Lee chapter responds to local fires, assists military families and offers Health and Safety classes. Fire victims are helped with food and shelter and first responders are supported with a Red Cross canteen offering food and drink at the scene. Since January close to 20 emergency military calls have been received and most calls take up to 3 hours each to complete. 224 people were trained in lifesaving skills.
The HPG Red Cross is proud to serve the community and depends on the generosity of our neighbors to continue our work. To make a donation, become a volunteer or take a class call the chapter at 804-458-6007.
